The Instituto Brasileiro de Jogo Responsável (IBJR) has published a manifesto outlining guidelines for responsible gambling, with focus on promoting transparency, security, and integrity within Brazil’s rapidly growing online betting sector. The manifesto presents several measures to upgrade market security, including the use of facial recognition technology to prevent underage gambling.
As part of the efforts to promote a safer betting environment, the IBJR has recommended that authorised brands in Brazil feature a.bet.br domain on their websites. This will clearly indicate that these sites are licensed and legally authorised, providing players confidence in the legitimacy of the platform.
In a statement, the IBJR reaffirmed its dedication to promoting a sustainable, safe, and trustworthy online betting ecosystem. “Our goal is to promote all efforts to develop a sustainable, safe, reliable online betting ecosystem that generates benefits for society,” the organisation stated.
The IBJR emphasised the importance of regulating Brazil’s online betting market, noting that a properly regulated environment will abolish illegal practices and develop a fair playing field. The Brazilian authorities are already proactive and vigilant in detecting and addressing illegal activities within the sector.
Launch of Brazil’s regulated betting market
As Brazil prepares to launch its regulated sports betting and iGaming markets on January 1, the country is preparing to establish a legal framework for online gambling. The IBJR, representing 75% of the country’s gaming market, is playing a pivotal role in assuring the sector operates under strong principles of consumer protection and responsible gaming.
Principles for consumer protection and responsible gambling
The IBJR has introduced 15 principles focused at protecting players and promoting responsible gambling practices. These principles include:
- Protection for minors to prevent underage gambling
- Ensuring platforms work with licensed third-party providers
- Promoting evidence-based consumer protection research and initiatives
LOTERJ’s new guidelines for responsible betting
In support of IBJR’s initiatives, LOTERJ (the State Lottery of Rio de Janeiro) has released new betting guidelines, mandating licensed bookmakers to implement responsible gambling programs. LOTERJ President Hazenclever Lopes Cançado stated these guidelines reflect a commitment to modern, rigorous standards for bookmaker accreditation, highlighting the significance of responsible gaming practices in safeguarding bettors.
“We have established modern and rigorous requirements in the accreditation of Bookmakers, ensuring a safe environment, where responsible gaming practices play a crucial role in protecting bettors,” said Cançado.
