Philippines arrests eight foreign nationals in latest POGO raids

Philippine authorities have arrested eight foreign nationals in connection with illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) following coordinated raids in Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila.

According to local reports, the operations which was spearheaded by the country’s Department of Justice (DOJ), Bureau of Immigration (BI), and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), targeted residential properties suspected of housing illegal activities linked to offshore gaming. The raids also indicate a shift in how these operations are being conducted, moving from larger facilities to smaller groups within gated communities.

Raids expose foreigners involved in cybercrime, scamming

The raids, conducted based on intelligence gathered by the BI, led to the arrest of eight individuals, including six Chinese nationals and one Vietnamese. Investigators revealed that the suspects had relocated their operations to residential areas, hoping to avoid detection. However, the authorities successfully uncovered their illegal activities, signalling that operating in discreet locations will not protect them from the law.  During the search, authorities seized computer equipment and voice-over IP technology, tools commonly associated with phishing scams and fraudulent schemes. These discoveries point to the involvement of the suspects in cybercrimes, with offshore gaming operations serving as a front for more illicit activities. The use of technology to impersonate legitimate institutions raises serious concerns about the level of sophistication behind these crimes.

Immigration violations

In addition to the illegal gaming operations, authorities discovered that several of the suspects had violated immigration laws. Two Chinese nationals were found to be overstaying in the Philippines, while another lacked valid travel documents. Four of the foreign nationals were classified as illegal aliens, compounding their offences under the country’s immigration law.

The latest arrests have raised suspicions of a broader network of illegal POGO operations across the Philippines. Investigators are examining potential links between these suspects and a previous raid on a POGO facility in Porac, Pampanga, where three Chinese nationals were arrested.

Community vigilance

The success of the raids is partly attributed to tips from vigilant community members who reported suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods. This highlights the crucial role of public cooperation in identifying and reporting illegal POGO operations, especially those hidden within residential areas.

With the suspects now in NBI custody, Philippine authorities are continuing their efforts to uncover further illegal activities and bring those involved to justice. The DOJ has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the significant legal and economic issues posed by illegal POGOs, emphasising that cracking down on these operations remains a top priority for the government.
