When a person gambles to win, a potential gambling problem can escalate to a gambling addiction
We’ve reached the third and final part of our mini-series about the gambling addiction curve and our attempt to visualise the connection between why someone gambles, and its potential consequences. Let’s take a look at gamble to win back.
Here are a few signs that the person has changed the motivation to gamble:
- The person lets the gambling control his life
- The person lies to people around them
- The person takes loans, and his debts grow.
- Gambling is not fun anymore. The person is desperate to win back everything he’s lost.
- The person is always looking for new money to play with
- The person looks for a way out; thoughts of suicide is common.
Do you remember the definition for gambling addiction?
”For a gambling addict, the negative consequences are more obvious; people around the person has started to react; both the finances and personal health are affected. The person focuses on finding new money to gamble with. The gamble is not fun anymore. Instead, the addicted is driven by a desperation to win back the money he has lost.
At this stage, gambling has become a danger for the persons health. If the person can’t stop, and nobody reacts to help him, the following is imminent
- Personal bankruptcy
- Divorce
- Prison
- Suicide
For a gambling addict, all entertainment is gone! Naturally, the individual has a responsibility for the situation, but I believe the entire gambling industry would benefit from making sure that these people get the help they need.
So, what can we do?
We need to collaborate. On regulated markets, the authorities and gambling companies need to cooperate with organizations like QuitGamble.com and Gambler Anonymous (GA).
I believe we’re all in the same business of trying to make people happy. We have just different ways to do that. Wouldn’t it be awesome if gambling could remain fun, and that we together develop a safety system that captures those at risk of getting hurt by gambling?
The assumption on QuitGamble.com is that gambling isn’t the cause of addiction. The cause of addiction is pain. Gambling is just a way to escape pain. It’s the escape the person becomes addicted to.
Countless compulsive gamblers have witnessed about a calmness they experience during the time they gamble. For some precious time, nobody is criticizing them, or they don’t feel lonely or bored.
We at QuitGamble.com would like to collaborate with casinos and sportsbooks to help people regain control over their lives.
