Yanica Sant, General Counsel of the Malta Gaming Authority, resigns

Sant plans to leave the Gaming Authority but will remain in her role until February 2022. This being said, she will no longer perform duties related to regulation, inspection or enforcement nor shall she sit on any internal committees.

Sant has had a long and illustrious career with the MGA, joining in September 2014 as a legal intern before rising through the ranks, becoming a legal advisor, senior legal counsel before reaching the high rank of head of policy and international affairs until finally becoming the General Counsel in February of this year.

Dr. Sant also featured on two panels on regulatory compliance in Maltese iGaming during SiGMA’s Malta Week 2021
During her over seven year tenure for the Authority, Yanica has championed the regulator’s attempts to stamp out black market gambling and ensure a safer environment for players. The departure is amicable with the Gaming Authority stating that “The MGA would like to thank Yanica for her sterling work over the last seven-and-a-half years.” They continued by illustrating her service to the industry by referring to “her invaluable contributions at all levels of the Authority’s hierarchy and to most high-level projects over that time, including notably the drafting of the regulatory framework which was published in 2018.” Concluding, MGA stated that “we wish her the best of luck in her new endeavour, confident that she will continue to demonstrate the values which the MGA proudly upholds.” This also comes during a period of increased regulatory pressures including a crackdown on non-compliant operators as well as a set of reforms to the general regulatory framework of the authority. An example of this would be the Authority adding suppliers to its existing rules on suspicious betting reporting. During this year’s edition of SiGMA, Yanica Sant discussed the future of the gaming regulatory landscape in Malta in a panel entitled ‘Malta 2022 and ahead’ as well as in a separate panel where Dr. Sant spoke about the challenges of Data Protection within the Online Gambling sector.
